KOLLAM: The Vadakkumthala Muslim Jama’at Committee has, in a press note, demanded that a thorough investigation is needed against those who vandalised the mosque the other day. It alleged that some of the miscreants were from other districts and the police, who were well aware of this, were not taking any action.

‘‘The laxity of the police in arresting the miscreants is raising suspicion. The Salafi Masjid was constructed by some people with vested interests.

All protests raised against this were carried out in a peaceful way. The violence the other day was carried out by goons and anti-social elements. A thorough investigation will only reveal it,’’ said the committee.

It also alleged that the police had caned innocent people and had conducted mass-scale human rights violation by pelting stones at window panes of houses and destroying vehicles of the residents. It said that pointing out these violations, a complaint has been filed with the SHRC. Meanwhile, in the wake of the protests against police violence, Labour Minister Shibu Baby John and City Police Commissioner V Suresh Kumar visited the place on Sunday.

According to the police, the caning was carried out when violence erupted during a march taken out by a section of people on Friday.

In the wake of the violence, Shibu Baby John had held talks with the opposing groups and a meeting to resolve the issue is expected to be held on Wednesday in the presence of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala.
